Garden Dreadlocks

I planted these for garden interest about five years ago, and they keep coming back. AND, they're still interesting. The plant is often called 'love lies bleeding,' otherwise known as amaranthus.

This flower is also a grain. Amaranthus is another plant I grew from seed years ago, and now I have it every year because it re-seeds itself. The flowers are also popular for dried flower arrangements. Love Lies Bleeding is another name for Amaranthus.

Amaranthus is Starting to Fade

Amaranthus "Love Lies Bleeding." The dreadlocks of flowers are starting to fade. I'll clip some for flower arrangements, and leave the rest for winter birds, and for re-seeding, which this plant does liberally.

This is amaranthus - specifically, "love lies bleeding." What a horrible name! I ordered a packet of amaranthus seeds a few years ago and there will never be a need to plant it again. It re-seeds liberally, lots of "weeding" the seedlings. I grow this for the birds - they eat the seeds right off the plant through the winter - and for a friend who uses the spectacular flower sprays for dried flower arrangements. This plant does require staking towards the end of the season. I've read in some countries, this is treated like a grain.
