Waiting...and that Would Hurt My Neck

A windy afternoon fluffing up the red-stripey front of this Cooper's Hawk. The backyard fenceline is a good lookout post while waiting for little birds to come to the feeders.

It's a Bird Eat Bird World

Over at BoiseDailyPhoto.com today, I'm featuring a photo of an American Kestrel that was making a racket in the backyard yesterday. This hawk, unsure of the identification, got its picture taken just after capturing an Oregon junco in the front yard yesterday.

This little kestrel, "sparrow hawk" is a more common name, was sitting on a power line near my home yesterday. I thought it was a mourning dove, at first - about the same size.

If it was summer, I would have blamed the neighborhood cat for this. But I have a feeling this little bird was a victim of one of the Cooper's Hawks that have been frequenting the yard this winter.

And poof - little birds disappear! I believe this is a Cooper's Hawk, hard to tell because the photo is fuzzy, but it's a common hawk around here. And it's a smart hawk because it knows where to find an easy lunch - dining on little birds at backyard bird feeders.
