Tiny Pink Rose in the Garden

Some roses are still hanging on.

Mossy Rose Gall

A wasp did this to a rose bush. The sample showed up this week in the Ada County Master Gardener lab, so be on the lookout for this in your home roses. The gall is caused by Diplolepis spinosa, a cynipid gall wasp. The story is a bit disgusting. The wasps lay their eggs in the stem and the newly-hatched larvae grow inside until they are adults. The plant is tricked into growing the gall to house the babies, stealing nutrients from the plant. A lot of galls can kill the rose. Insecticides aren't an option because they don't work. The galls have to be picked off and disposed of. Check for galls that may have fallen from the plant in autumn.

I don't have many roses left, after bacterial rose cane blight hit my plants. But this pink English rose is still thriving.

Heartbreak Among the Roses

Bacterial cane blight. Notice the purplish area and then the black? This darn bacteria is ruining roses all over the valley, and this infection was found on my Princess Diana rose bush. When the infection is localized, cut below it several inches and be careful that the cane doesn't touch any other canes. Try not to touch the infected area. Put the cane in the trash. Sterilize clippers with Lysol after every cut. If there is a lot of infection, pull up the whole plant and discard. Do not compost the clippings. I have found this on every rose plant in my yard except for the miniatures.

The Last Rose?

I think it might be. A couple of hard frost nights and not much is left in the garden.

Rose Colors Brighter in Autumn?

I think so. Maybe they just look that way because the foliage is fading, but I love the late season show.

Orange roses are my favorite for color in the garden, but I've yet to find one with much of a scent.

Unwanted Rose?

It looks like my lovely lavender rose has been taken over by the root stock. Over time, this can happen to grafted roses. I try to buy non-grafted roses, but this one was an unmarked bargain bin plant I found about 8 years ago.
