Lavender harvested during the summer is ready to be stuffed into dryer sachets. There is a little more to harvest this week.

Lavender

Lavender is blooming. This is Hidcote.

Munstead Lavender

This is munstead lavender. Compare to yesterday's post and you'll see the flowers are fuller. The fragrance is more mild and has lilac overtones.

Hidcote Lavender

Two kinds of lavender are blooming in the yard. This one is hidcote. The flowers are dark purple and the fragrance is sharp, almost medicinal. Tomorrow, I'll show you a different type of lavender.

Lingering Blooms in Frosty Weather

A mini rose and lavender stem. Their colors are fading in our frosty weather.

Munstead Lavender

The Munstead lavender is blooming. The flowers are lighter colored than the Hidcote lavender, and the scent is sweeter and lilac-like.

Hidcote Lavender Blooms

The Hidcote lavender along the front walkway is starting to bloom. This is classified as a true English lavender and it has a stronger scent than the Munstead lavender plants in the yard. The Munstead lavenders aren't blooming yet.

Late Season Lavender

A couple of fresh lavender blossoms late in the season. This is my favorite lavender plant. The blossoms have a lilac note to temper the sometimes-stringent lavender. This is a Munstead variety.

Bees Love Lavender

Plenty of plants in my yard are there really just for the pollinators. I have several lavender plants just for that reason. I've tried cutting the flowers and bringing them inside to enjoy, but they're just too strong-smelling for me.

This is the corner of one of my garden beds. Everything is growing nicely and crowding into each other. There's lavender, three kinds of zinnias, basil, tickseed (coreopsis), and a small hops vine that is not welcome. I used to have hops against the fence. I dug them out this year because they were too aggressive. They throw runners and re-seed. I'm still battling seedlings.
