I've had more than one person comment on this strange plant with the "lacy leaves." It's a peony that's been munched! This actually happens every year and I've never managed to catch the critter responsible. Even though this happens, the plant pops back each year with big flowers.
They always peek up looking so red, but the leaves will become green and they'll bloom quickly for late spring. Ants are just crazy about the sugary dew on peonies. I'll get a close-up of them when the buds form. I've read the ants don't do any damage - they just like to visit.
