If it was summer, I would have blamed the neighborhood cat for this. But I have a feeling this little bird was a victim of one of the Cooper's Hawks that have been frequenting the yard this winter.
Hi MoJo, love the fantasy football video link today. Hawks kill these little birds to eat them. They rip out the torso and leave the backfeathers, head and beak behind. We've got at least three Cooper's Hawks staking out the birdfeeders around here, just waiting for their lunch to arrive.

Do hawks kill these birds to eat them or just to eliminate a competitor for the resources in the area?
