Finally!

First tomato harvest date 2012: August 15th. That's the latest tomato harvest since I've been gardening at this location (10 years). These are also the largest 'sweet 100' cherry tomatoes I've ever seen in my garden. And there are a lot more just this big waiting to turn red.

Frozen Garden: Cherry Tomatoes

Normally, I would save as many tomatoes as possible before the first big freeze...but I was out of town when it happened this year.

Mark the calendar. First date of harvest for 2011: August 3. Fingers crossed we have a growing season well into September this year since it got started so late.

Seed-Starting: Tomatoes and Basil

The plans for a "cherry tomato rainbow" have officially begun. I have several different colors of cherry tomato plants started, along with basil. Seeds should sprout in 7-10 days. I have a big cover to keep the pots moist and warm near a south-facing window.

Tomato Cage Brights

Right before the first big recent snowstorm, we painted the wooden tomato cages bright colors - thinking that would liven things up during the non-growing season.

Tomato Plant Babies

A couple of our cherry tomato plant seedlings. We're about 6 weeks from planting time. We'll start another round of plants next week. All the cherry tomato seeds sprouted. Not a single beefeater tomato seed sprouted. Hmph!

Frozen Fruit

How can that be that there are two still-red and frozen cherry tomatoes hiding in a garden bed?

Last-Minute Tomato Harvest

We hurried outside Wednesday night to pick as many tomatoes as possible before the killing frost that arrived overnight. My family helped. The instructions were to pick tomatoes that were showing any bit of color, in hopes they will ripen inside over the next couple of weeks.
